WWF HQ Sustainability (2006)
The new World Wide Fund (WWF) headquarters in the UK is a state of the art example of sustainable design and construction. It includes a special WWF Experience zone for visitors and a Learning Zone especially for schools. Around 300 WWF staff will be based there connecting to colleagues worldwide.
Designed by Hopkins Architects, the building has a curved, diagrid roof just visible at the level of the surrounding tree canopy. The designers deliberately set out to include many sustainable environmental features such as ground source heating and water recycling. The building’s designers aimed to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding accreditation which is the highest standard achievable for a building’s performance.
Atelier Ten designed the rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems with support from Aquality Trading & Consulting Ltd.
Aquality is proud to have been involved in this project supporting the WWF in their ideas & pursuit of sustainability. Below is a testimonial from Lucy Potashnick | Environmental Manager | WWF-UK;
” WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment so when it came to building our new UK headquarters we wanted to show it was possible to create a state-of-the-art building with minimal environmental impact. To reduce demand on freshwater, we incorporated a rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling system delivered by Aquality which we believe will deliver benefits for years to come. ”
